Caroline is a widow who lives with her two children and her niece in Kibera Slums in Nairobi. The 38 year old woman has a small stall that she uses as a salon to braid women’s hair for a living.

Like all the other women in Ladies of Influence, she believes that a woman must learn to be independent, whether she is getting support from her husband or not. She says that there is nothing like stay at home mum and therefor everyone should learn ways of getting an income, especially if one comes from a poverty stricken families.

Caroline uses the unconditional grant to buy hair products and hair extensions for the salon. She then uses the profit she makes to pay for her rent and cater for all her other needs.

If it wasn’t for the unconditional grant, Caroline said that she would be living on debts that she was sure she would ever finish paying.
